Check your insurance. The first thing to figure out before you go to your dermatologist is how you will pay for your visit. Many insurance companies cover the cost of an office visit for medical reasons like acne or skin cancer. But, they usually do not cover cosmetic procedures like Botox or fillers. Before you go to your appointment, contact your insurance provider to see if and how your visit is covered. Or, make sure you take an appropriate payment method with you if you plan to pay out of pocket.

Prepare for your appointment. Once you have the payment situation figured out, it’s time to gather everything you need. You will likely have at least a week or two between when you schedule your dermatologist visit and when you go in. During this time, you’ll need to gather up some information. Take a list of medications you are currently taking, including the dosage and how often you take them. Your dermatologist will need to know this so they can ensure they don’t give you something that will react with prescriptions you are currently on.

You should also keep a journal or notepad close by in the week or weeks leading up to your appointment. Write down questions you have as they come to you so you don’t forget to ask your dermatologist at the appointment. Questions may include cost of treatments, how often you’ll need treatments, and more.

Going in. It’s finally time for your appointment. Your dermatologist wants to look at your skin, so, if possible, forgo wearing makeup to your appointment. This will allow your doctor to better see what your concerns are. You should also be prepared to be honest with your dermatologist about your concerns and goals for treatment.
